Skin Testing (Always, ask about allergies)

Testing allows you to see how our body will respond.

Testing the oil on the soles of the feet is the safest place.
> Always test here for babies (>1 month old) and children and for those with allergies or sensitive skin

Another location is on the inside of the arm just above the elbow
> 10-15 minutes is usually sufficient.

If the person you are testing is prone to allergies or unusually sensitive
> Allow for 30 minutes.



TOPICAL
How to use essential oils for Topical Application
*(Dilution may be required)

Topical application of many essential oils is safe and can offer an enjoyable, relaxing experience.

For topical application, follow these simple steps:

Carefully tip the oil bottle and place 2 - 3 drops in the palm of your hand or directly on the desired application area.

> If dropping oil in your hand, rub palms together in a circular motion and then massage oil onto the desired point of application.

> If applying directly to the desired area, use your hand to massage the oil in a circular motion into the skin. Repeat if desired.

Topical or direct application
"Topical" means applying the oils directly onto the skin.

They can be applied on the keys points of the body are:

Crown of head
Neck
Abdomen
Sole & top of feet
Forehead
Behind ears
Upper back
Along the spine
Over vital organs
Ankles
Other area of concern



"Neat" means to apply the essential oil undiluted.
Beware of Hot oils : thyme, oregano, clove and savory, lemongrass, cinnamon bark, leaf(cinnamic aldehyde), thieves

"Layering" means to use a technique consists of applying multiple oils one at a time.

> For example, rub marjoram over a sore muscle, massage it into the tissue gently until the area is dry and then apply a second oil such as peppermint until the oil is absorbed and the skin is dry. Then layer on the third oil, such as basil and continue massaging.
(* Do not mix the oils, allow 1-2 mins between oils)

"Dilute" means to mix the essential oil with a carrier oil (e.g. V-6) before using.

> This is generally the preferred method for applying essential oils on the body. This allows for more controlled absorption into the skin as essential oils can evaporate quickly. It is also safer and lessens the chance of sensitivity.

What is a Carrier Oil?
Young Living (YL) has combined seven of these carrier oils into a blend called "V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex, (V-6)". This blend is highly nourishing and full of anti-oxidants. It is excellent for diluting essential oils.

Other examples of carrier oils are jojoba, olive, sesame seed, grape seed, sweet almond, sunflower seed, wheat germ, and vitamin E oils. Whatever you decide to use should be organic if possible.



How to dilute for:

> Babies and children (usually 1/2 to 1/3 adult)
Mix 1-2 drops of essential oil to 1/2 tsp. of carrier oil or
2-3 drops of essential oil to 1 tsp. of carrier oil or
15 drops of essential oil to 30ml (1 oz. ) of carrier oil

> Adults
Mix 3-4 drops of essential oil to 1/2 tsp. of carrier oil or
6-8 drops of essential oil to 1 tsp. carrier oil or
30-40 drops of essential oil to 1 oz. of carrier oil

Note:
- When diluting for repeated use, always use containers made of glass or earthenware.
- Any diluted oils is recommended to be used in 6 months period.
Do not use plastic as plastic particles can leach into the oil, then into our skin once applied.
- Do not use any essential oils on or near an infant under 1 month old
- We recommend for children less than 2 1/2 years or 30 months old to dilute with V-6 or any carrier oil

How to use essential oils for Babies and Children
Many essential oils are safe to use on babies and children. Dilution is generally ½-1/3 that of adults. Always test the skin first for oil sensitivity, the bottom of the feet are the safest place.


How to use essential oils for Infants and Babies "Indirectly"
Rub 1-2 drops of essential oil into the palm of your left hand until they are almost dry. Without touching the baby, hold your hands over the area of the body that needs attention. This works well for infants and babies without having to directly apply oils.

Baby Massage:

Add 1-2 drops of essential oil to 2 tablespoons of V-6 oil and blend well. Use this mixture to give baby a relaxing massage.
Once the baby is over 2 months old, essential oils may be increased to 3-5 drops per 2 tablespoons of V-6 oil.

Essential Oil Massage:

Essential oils can be used before massage, during a massage, and after a massage.

Making a Warm Compress:

> For Infants, Children, and Sensitive Skin
Place 5-15 drops of essential oil into a basin of warm water (approx. 100 degrees); Agitate the water vigorously and let stand for 1 minute. Place a dry cloth on top of the water to soak up the oils that have floated to the surface. Wring out cloth and apply it to body. Cover with a thick towel to seal in warmth no longer than 1 hour.

> For Adults
For deeper penetration of an essential oil you can create a hot compress. Rub 1-3 drops of essential oil on location. Cover with a comfortably hot, damp towel. Cover the moist towel with a dry towel for 10-60 minutes. You may experience warming. If it becomes uncomfortable apply a carrier oil to location.

Cold Packs:
Apply essential oils on the location, followed by cold water or ice pack when treating inflamed or swollen tissue. Frozen packages of peas or corn make excellent ice packs. Keep the cold pack on until the swelling diminishes.

If there are neurological problems, use cool water or cold packs never hot ones.

Bath:

Oils do not mix with water and if not properly dispersed can irritate the skin. Add 2-3 drops of undiluted essential oil to 1 cup Epsom or Himalayan salts or add 5-15 drops of oil to a bath gel base directly to bath water.

If more essential oils are desired, mix the oil first into bath salts or a bath gel base before adding to the bath water. Generally, never use more than 10 drops of essential oils in one bath. When essential oils are put directly into bath water without a dispersing agent, they can cause serious discomfort on sensitive skin because the essential oils tend to float, undiluted, on top of the water.

Foot Bath:

You can use this to relax, to soothe tired or inflamed feet, etc. Add 5-10 drops of essential oil to warm water in a tub or basin and soak feet 15-30 minutes.

Reflex points and "Vita Flex Technique"
This technique stimulates the nerve pathways that lead to internal body systems. This is a very effective way to deliver the therapeutic benefits of essential oils throughout the body. You can use this technique to effectively target specific areas of the body. Reflex points are located on both the feet and hands. Stimulating these pathways with essential oils can produce rapid results.

Raindrop Therapy
The raindrop technique combines essential oils with massage to bring the body into structural and electrical alignment. Viruses and bacteria can hibernate or lie dormant along the spine causing inflammation, disease, spinal disfigurement, and many other problems. This technique is relatively easy to understand and put into practice. Young Living Essential Oils carries a kit collection called the “Raindrop Technique” that includes the oils, a demonstration DVD, and brochure.






How to use essential oils in Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the science of smell and it eases the body, mind and body


Direct Inhalation:
Inhaling is good for stress, nervous conditions, restlessness, energy, stamina, concentration, cardiovascular challenges and respiratory conditions. It can help people with physical changes, mental alertness, clarity, relaxation, emotional release and much more.


Oil will travel through the nasal passages into the lungs and then to every cell of the body. And it also passes into the brain via the limbic system.


Essential Oils can be inhaled directly from the bottle or from the palms of your hands.


Method : Up to 3 different oils may be used at a time.


Place 2-3 drops of essential oil in the palms of your left hand.
Rub gently clockwise with the flat palm of your right hand.
Cup your hands together over your nose & mouth.
Inhale deeply and slowly for 6-8 minutes.
*(Do not touch your eyes)


Steam:

Add a few drops of essential oil into a bowl that has been filled with hot (not boiling) water. Drape a towel over both the bowl and your head. Breathe in deeply. This is great for sinus congestion.


For cars :-

Apply oils to a cotton ball or tissue (do not use synthetic fibers or fabric) and place it in the air vent of your car. You may also use a car diffuser to diffuse the oils.


 






Essential Oil Diffuser:

Cold air diffuser: (Highly recommended)
This proved to be the most effectively way to disperse the oil's thousand of molecules into the air. A cold air diffuser does not harm the molecules.

- You can create a germ free zone and therapeutic or healing zone by diffusing essential oils.
- This is a wonderful way to add fragrance to the air and it can act as an insect repellent in your home.
- This is an excellent way to get oils into the respiratory system of family members, especially during the cold and flu season.

Humidifier or Vaporizer: (Not recommended)
Essential oils can dissolve petrochemicals (plastic), adding drops of essential oils directly may cause it to degrade over time.

Aroma lamp, Candles or Burner: (Not recommended)
It is not recommended to use as heat will change the chemical structure of the molecules, which can render the oil therapeutically less benefit and even create toxic compounds.

Method for using a cold air diffuser:

Start by placing 8-10 drops of oil into the diffuser's well and let it run for about 15-30 minutes a day. The diffuser can be moved from room to room to truly clean the air and make a room smell great. As you become accustomed to the oils and recognized their effects, you may increase the diffusing time to 2-3 hours per day.

- Do not use more than 1 blend at a time in a diffuser as this may change the smell and the therapetic benefit. However, a single oil may be added to a blend when diffusing
- Place the diffuser high in the room. This is to let the oil mist falls though the air and removes the odor-causing substances.

Indirect Inhalation:

Perfume or cologne:

Many essential oils can be worn as perfumes. This is a non-toxic and chemical free way of adding the nourishing benefits of oils into your daily routine.

HOUSE CLEANING

How to use Essential Oils for Disinfecting
Essential oils kill germs

Essential oils are a non-toxic and chemical free way to clean and disinfect surfaces. We use essential oils to clean our kitchen, bathroom, floors, walls, cars, toys, laundry, dishes... just about everything! You can make your own cleaning solution or disinfectant in a spray bottle.

Disinfecting Spray Recipe:

Add 15 - 20 drops of lemon, thieves, or purification etc. essential oil to 120ml to 180ml (4-6 oz.) spray bottle filled with water.





The great thing about this book is that it's referring to Young Living oils, blends, and supplements. It tells how you can use it, diffuse, apply topically, and ingest. It tells you recipes you can create that may help with certain things like coughs, cold, flu, headaches, and the list goes on and on. I love it because it lists EVERY single oil and blend that Young Living has and tells their botanical family, plant origin, extraction methods, key constituents, historical data, medical properties, uses, fragrant influences, how to apply and if there are any cautions. I COULD NOT LIVE without my Essential Oils Pocket Reference. Seriously! Well, I could live, but my life with oils would be MUCH more complicated.

There is a Desk Reference you can get that is a great tool as well, it's a little more expensive...so starting with the pocket reference should be fine.
